RICHARD NICOLL AT THE LCM – MY POINT OF VIEW
Whilst I am still working on the material and photographs I gathered in those two days of the London Collections: Men a – the men’s fashion weeks have already moved on to Milan, where it is buzzing at the moment.
You may have seen photos from one or the other show from the LCM circulating in the world-wide web – however this here is my very own point of view – quite literally as this time I was taking photos from the audience space – and on the collection.
I always love it when designers have a strong reference to a certain subject or period of time but of course without having a collection looking like theater costumes – wearable is
the key word. For Richard Nicoll wearable comes easy and as a designer he isn’t new to me – I was wearing a Richard Nicoll jacket here. If you want to know with what words I would describe his Autumn/Winter 13 collection: The Life Aquatic (thanks to the short beanie hats which remind of seaman and are very British seeming) meets Appollo 13 ( the striking silver metallics and over-sized silhouettes of the coats) with a little jail house rock (the safety orange and the long purse chains). Of course not exactly what the designer had in mind when he was creating the capsule collection, but the p.o.v of a girl standing in the audience. When it comes to designer himself – he took his inspiration from post-punk, no-wave rebellion, brutalist architecture letting industrial and classical essentials flow in.
Isn’t fashion a bit similar to art paintings? Everyone who looks at them will have a very subjective and individual idea and impression of what he sees. The fabrics used in this collection are merino wool, cashmere, angora knit, loden felts and jacquards and I think it is safe to say that this is a collection that is authentic and practical.
Now I am left wondering: What words do cross your mind when looking at Richard Nicoll’s Autumn/Winter collection?
